I much prefer the iPad for viewing (they say it is for 'consuming' information) and the Macbook for preparing it. They have different functions.
When I play piano, I am quite happy with my ipod touch as it is not far away from my eyes (although I often just use my iPad,) but if playing guitar or sax, it is on a music stand and I am positioned further away, so iPad is better. Also if other band members are reading off the charts, iPad. I also have other apps which are useful, PDF music viewing apps*, a tuner, recording app etc.
My Macbook stays at home and is used for preparing my notation, PDFs, iReal book charts etc.
It does take a while to work out how to use them both and you have to try out things and give it time for you to see if you can get used to it that way or not. So take the time before making a decision. Remember the iPad is new to most of us and we are all trying to find out the best way to use it. The sheer number of apps (music related) help make it become part of you the musician as you grow into it and configure it to what you need.
