Thread: Minor Chords (hyphen vs. "m")

Default Minor Chords (hyphen vs. "m")

I imagine that this question has been asked a million times, but here goes.
Why are the chords eg: Dm written as D_ others use symbols.
I am getting old now over 70 and have to now learn a new way of remembering the chords.
    Thanks moan over. Chris

    Hi Chris,
The reason is simple. iReal pro was developed for use on a hand-held, shirt-pocket sized smartphone with a small screen.
The hyphen (-) takes up less space than the “m”. For a simple chord like D min that's not a huge problem. As you want to use more complex, longer qualities like Dm7, or Dm7/C and Dm7b5 charts become more crowded and less readable.

The hyphen is also commonly used in jazz notation to indicate minor chords. (eg. Realbook charts)

    minor or hyphen (minus)
to input a minor chord in Edit, use hyphen, C-7 (equals Cm7). There is a global setting for changing the hyphen into m automatically, but it does not change an inputted m to a hyphen. If you are sharing charts with others, it is best to use hyphen, then on their device running iReal Pro, they can choose which they want to see.
The player should recognise lowercase m and play it as a minor however.
    And
Chord quality symbols (minor and augmented)

Both are from the GLOSSARY (lot's of good info)

You can still choose to use the lowercase "m" if you prefer.
Enter minor chords in the editor using the hyphen, then display all your charts with the "m" instead.
