end button behaviour

I have a song in 4/4 with the last bar having chords on beats 1, 2 & 3, and I want the song to end on beat 3. I place an "END" marker on beat 3, but the song stops on beat 1, and doesn't play the last 2 chords. If I don't have the "END" marker, the song continues on to the first beat of the next(non-existent) bar. Am I missing something?

The END instruction is used to instruct the player to not play a written turnaround measure the final time.
