    Default Extended Scale

    Extended Scale

The International Music Federation's bi-annual meeting concluded today in Vienna.
It was announced that agreement was finally reached to add an additional note to the the musical scale in order to accommodate the continued evolution of modern musical composition. This change would not become effective until 2020 to allow musical instrument manufacturers and music publishers time to comply with the new specifications.

The added note would be named "H" as an extension of the current alphabetical progression.
Phonetic note-names in the major scale would remain unchanged except for the addition of "ha".
--> do, re, mi, fa, so, ha, la, ti, and do again (to complete the octave)
The new note is often sounded as a triplet.

In the chromatic scale, the addition of a new H# (Ab) would also be needed.
Beginning in 2020 piano keyboards will have both H's and H'#’s included thus changing the familiar pattern of black keys from 2-3-2-3... to 2-4-2-4.

    ********
It would be helpful if, in future updates, iReal pro could reflect these changes when they are implemented.

Yup… In German-speaking countries and some others H is the designation for the note we call B natural, and B is the designation for the note we call B flat. Thus, no international body would use H to designate a new note.

You are correct, so in German-speaking countries the added note will be designated:
    " Ü " (like an upright smiley-face with a BIG grin)

Not to be confused with "Ut" which has been replaced in modern usage, by "Do"

    Common usage:

Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Üh-Ti and finally Do will be the new phonetic octave scale in German speaking countries.
Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ha-Ti & Do in the U.S. and others.

The added "Ü" (is pronounced "eweh")

    Music evolves.

Default Extended Scale implementation delayed again

The Extended Scale Sub-committee of the International Music Federation (Le sous-comité ŕ grande échelle de la Fédération internationale de musique) met today (using zoom because of covid-SARS) and voted to further delay the implementation of additional musical notes for yet another year.

The highlight of the meeting was to be a demonstration and spontaneous jam session with the proposed extended musical scale and added notes. Musicians participating were disappointed with the covid-caused online format and were unable to complete the demonstration session due to the latency they experienced which adversely affected their ability to play together.
