How about a way to indicate chord rhythms if needed. Just saw the post for Goldfinger and know that right now the chord rhythm can't be notated. Larry
This would indeed be a great feature, to have some simple notation for rhythms etc. either above or below stave.
(Although, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't know the syncopated motif of Goldfinger!)
As an admirer and now devoted user of this wonderful app, I would like to offer some observations on features or improvements to this app.
1. Custom Chord Qualities.
2. Multirest: A bar style [ ------- ] multirest would be useful in addition to the repeat marks .//.
2. On the 'Alternate Chords' section, would be wonderful to add random numbers or text. i.e. to denote number of tacet bars or add expression marks.
3."Fill" Text - to add to end of bars.
4. Resize: Horizontal Spacers or stave resize option would be useful (especially for long chord extentions).
5. More rehearsal marks.
6. Direct upload to iPhone via server, software or iTunes as opposed to the current email functionality.
(I have already emailed developer with a few of these requests, just a record for this forum.)
Some extra info on each tune would be really helpful , particularly the FIRST note in the melody etc,
As an example, here is a snippet of a handy web site which holds such info on many jazz songs. Might give you an idea. Buf for me, knowing which note is the first in the tune is the most important. Make it clear to see too. :
------------------------------------
KEY
====
start note includes pickup; first chord does not
NRB = New Real Book: vol, page
RB5 = Real Book, Fifth Edition
RB = "Real Book" (A, B, C ... are not actual designations; your page numbers may vary)
UJ = "Ultimate Jazz Fake Book" (Hal Leonard)
JA = "Jamey Abersold: vol, track
Title style key start first NRB RB5 RB UJ JA note chord
A beautiful friendship swing C E C 53
Alfie's Theme swing Bbm F Bbm B 4
Etc
I would also add a new info item to this: namely the Number of the corresponding "Hal Leanard Jazz Playalong" Volume and track since these are now substabtial and useful as well. ( they have benefits for live performance since they oftren have LESS choruses for solos , plus contain a melody track to learn the tunes )
Just to add - here is the link to the web site in question, might speed things up for you :)

I've just realized that I could
use "rename playlist" and "copy playlist" functions. I have a trio playlist that will need to to copied and revised for duo arrangements, that will require renaming the original list and copying it and making the changes.
Maybe this function is already available and I haven't figured out how to do it?
I just fiddled around and figured out how to rename, but not copy playlists. So I guess I'm only half
an idiot :) [so at that rate it's a pretty good day for me! :) ]
You cannot copy playlists within iReal Book. It is on the todo list for a future update.
You might be able to Send your Playlist to yourself, pick up your email, click on the Playlist name, and irb will ask if you want to add it to your library. It should be renamed (with an appended 1 after it). You can rename it in Edit mode by tapping on the name in Playlist listings.
If for some reason it does not work with the appended 1, then you can do this:
There are two workarounds depending if you have the Mac editor or the Web editor. Basically you email the playlist from your iPhone/iPod touch to yourself on your computer and use whichever editor to change the Playlist name, then you email it back to yourself and pick up the email on your iPhone/iPod.
Here are the instructions (iReal book v2.5)
Prepare your playlist in iReal book, in Playlist list, tap on the playlist you have made so the titles of the songs show, Tap on Send button (bottom right), Tap on "To other iPhone/iPod" and address an email address to yourself that you can pick up on your computer.
then on either Mac Editor or Web editor
for Mac Editor v0.5.1
Either make sure Mac editor is not open, or close any open Playlists (otherwise the imported Playlist songs will be added to the current Playlist you have open.)
Click on the Playlist name in your Macs email application and the Mac editor will open with the songs and Playlist in the Playlist drawer.
Rename the Playlist name and press Return.
Click on Playlist to device button.
Email to yourself at an address you pick up on your iPhone/iPod touch.
When the email arrives, Tap on the HTML attachment, then the Playlist name. iReal Book should open with the same songs but different Playlist name.
for Web Editor, currently v1.1
Get your email on your computer, right click (on a Mac*, control-click if necessary) and Copy Link (or Copy Link Location).
Open your web browser and load up our Web editor**, Paste into the Import box and press the Import button.
Just below the Import box is the Playlist name, Rename it. Press Enter (Return.)
In the Email box the original Playlist name should have changed.
Copy the 2 line contents of the Email box to an email to yourself that you can pick up on your iPhone/iPod touch. Tap on the new Playlist name in your email when it arrives. iReal Book should open with the same songs but different Playlist name.
*
Some older Macintosh OS do not run Mac editor. You use the Web editor for editing and preparing charts. Use the right-click button if your mouse has one (and System Preferences are programmed to use it) or Control-click.

[this applies to the versions mentioned. For future versions the procedure could change. If you are having problems, post a query to us in our Support forum. Copying Playlists directly inside iReal Book is planned in a future version, rendering this procedure redundant.]
Given that iRealBook and BIAB both operate primarily on the chord based structure, and that iRB handles the iPhone/Pad arena beautifully, it would be wonderful to be able to export songs to BIAB. Thus achieving the midi file format that many have asked about. It seems to me to be an extension on the model.
On another note, I love this app, and would have bought the iPod if iRealBook was the only app available. I'll be buying the iPad for the same reason. (Here in Australia, it's not yet available.) I was looking for a reason to buy the iPad. iRealBook has given me that reason. Every working or rehearsing, jazz or pop muso needs this app.
The lack of a melody line is a plus for old musos like me. The quick glancing through the lists, then onto the tunes. We're supposed to know the melodies anyway. If I don't, that's a great reason to listen to the originals or look at the sheet copy. For newer players, what a great resource for having the basics in front of them, anywhere.
Thanks again for the best app on the iPod!
Hi guys! Thanks again for all your amazing work. As a pro musician I use iRealBook constantly for both reading through changes of jazz tunes and inputting songs for various cover bands and original projects. In fact I often have to let people know that I'm not text messaging during their rehearsal but creating charts for their songs! Also my iPhone sitting on my keyboard is much more incognito than a music stand and standlight on stage. Anyway, I would love it if you would add a P for pre-chorus under Symbols. I have to use A or D which can be confusing especially if I want to post the song to the forum. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
Hi Pianojuggler, thank you for your comments. Glad you like the app. We do too!
You might have already figured out this, but you can use Staff text for any words you need to input at a specific beat and use the up arrows to raise the text above a measure.
An example is here:
P Demo by Unknown Composer
Click on beat 1 of measure 2 and look at Text.
Thanks! I hadn't realized that text could be moved up. That's going to very usefull! Still I think that adding a "P" for pre-chorus as white text in the small black box (like the other letters under "symbols") would look a little slicker and seems like an easy add. Thanks for this amazing app and for being so responsive to these posts!
It would be a nice feature to support dropbox for getting tunes to/from the mac. I currently use dropbox to get pdfs onto my ipad.
Dropbox gives 2G of space for free - which should be more than enough for moving irb charts.

First off: Hi everybody.
Second: Thanks for this marvelleous app!
I have already seen the iReal Book before it got the player option and always thought "hm, not bad, really...". Now that it got the player, purchasing it was an absolute no-brainer! Seriously, in those 1-2 weeks it already became one of my most used apps.
Anyway (and of course, that's why I'm posting here...), I have a few feature requests.
I'm really sorry if some (or maybe all?) have been mentioned in this thread already, but it's a bit much to read through all the posts...
So, here goes my little list.
1) Styles
- More styles, please. Yeah, obviously, I also want some more, I know this has been requested often already and I'm absolutely positive that the developers are on it. Basically, I miss a handful of straight 8th note styles (suitable for rock, soul, etc.) and a bunch of 16th note styles (suitable for funky stuff and the likes).
- Variations of existing styles. I'm sorry to say so, but sometimes I feel the existing styles are a little too busy. This is especially true for the piano comping and the drums. I really wish there was an option to switch to some rather rudimentary style, such as, say, half or full note piano comping, a simple 8th note cymbal/hat and not much else. Would let me concentrate a little more on what I'm doing. And I'd like to see some drum styles not using cymbals.
In addition, it'd perhaps be nice to have like, say, 3 (or so) main variations of the styles, such as, say, "less busy", "normal" and "busy".
- Some songs more or less require certain accents (or even stops) to be present. It'd be quite nice if those could be somehow implemeted. Maybe not in the iOS interface (might become too busy to find your way around it) but in the editor(s) only.
- A style editor? That'd be tremendous, seriously!
2) Sounds and stuff
- I really wish I could change the players sounds at least a little. Such as switching the piano to an electric (rhodes-alike) piano, the bass to some electric fingered bass. And well, I'd also like a little tighter drumset.
- Audio input. Well, might not be of too much use to many people, but as a guitar player, I defenitely wish there was an option to connect my guitar straight to iReal Book (I already own Peaveys excellent Amplink LiNK interface). Of course it'd be even better if there was something like a really simple amp simulator, possibly just offering one clean and one overdriven channel with some basic gain/EQ section, plus maybe a little bit of reverb and delay.
- Alternatively (because the above mentioned should really only make sense to guitarists and bassists), it could be sufficient to make iRealBook fully "background compatible". As said, I already use Peaveys Amplink - this is along with the software. It's amazingly CPU efficient, so I could imagine iRB would run along fine with it. Hm, could as well be a problem of the Amplink app, which may not allow other audio apps to run in the backgriund... a word of the developers about whom is respnsible would be very nice, because if it was up to Peavey, I'd ask them to add full multitasking/background support.
- Export as MIDI file has already been mentioned, AFAIK. It could as well be nice to export things as MP3 and automatically add it to your iPod library - one could possibly overcome the limitations mentioned above that way.
3) Handling
- It would be really nice if one wouldn't need a net connection to transfer files back and forth to and from your computer. For instance, photos of the sheets could possibly just be added to the photo album, files from the computer could possibly just be transferred via drag and drop (such as possible with various file reading apps already).
I'm in foreign countries rather often, so online access sometimes simply isn't given or too expensive. But I'd still like to transfer files from and to my computer.
Ok, guess that was it for now. Thanks for reading and thanks for this great app!
Cheers
Sascha
i love this app! it has only gotten better since i first downloaded it a few years ago. every single upgrade has made this an extremely light, formidable piece of software and it has made my professional life flourish. probably the only really good reason i have to get an ipad.
i understand there must be at least a few reasons why adding a melody staff would be impossible (mobile size, legal probs with existing copyrighted charts, etc.). however, i find that making chord charts in finale is a pain in the coda and making chord charts in irealbook is incredibly easy!
if only i could export my form and chord notation into a music xml application i could get some serious work done on my mobile hardware. i haven't seen any music xml support questions on the forums... this upgrade would make my irealbook a hardcore taking care of music business machine.
does music xml support chord notation? not sure, but just checking it out.
thanks,
taylortronic
Hi Sascha,
We are working on more styles so it will be a while before we are able to consider this idea. We would also have to work with hardware options for signal input so will take some time to develop. We review all the threads from time to time as we are developing ideas so will review your request in the future.
And if you have other ideas, just post them. Thanks again. :)
Very impressed with the app and I've found it most useful. It's a request-killer!
Been poking round the forums for a bit, and thought I'd contribute some charts, fill in the blanks. Much as I suppose many people do - if I need a chart enough to enter it into iRB, I'll share it.
I think most issues in a fakebook-style presentation can be worked around with the iRB system, but I'd like to request the ability to enter a nice big friendly anticipation tie. Perhaps this could be coded as a special dumb character placed in the previous beat?
Needn't affect playback, just for visual convenience.
Oh - one more thing. I notice someone was requesting classical "charts". How about a new forum category devoted to that? I'd be happy to get the ball rolling (as time permits) if you do.
Best, J
Hi, this is my first post here, I am having a great time with iReal book, thanks for a great software!:)
I am playing a lot of balkan music and I have a request, to be able to insert more odd time signatures, like 11/8, 7/16 etc, and to be able to group the time like (for instance, 7/8 = 3+4 or 4+3) I have tried all styles in 7/8 and they all group the timing 4+3. It would be possible to group them my self if it was possible to insert 3/8 and 4/8 time signatures. However it would be easier the first way.
Cheers / Ulrik
Hello Ulrik,
the only thing I can think of right now would be (for instance) using 3/4 and 4/4 for a 7/4 feel, selecting a rhythm of 'even 8ths' (so it kind of translates to 7/8.) It is not at all what you would want, but might work close enough for some practice in timing. I had a play around with this idea and either had to reduce the drums or bass down so it did not interfere with the feel I was wanting.
Obviously mixing 7/8 with 3/16 or odd ones like that would be more difficult!
Also you could try style Jazz>12 Jazz practice just as a beat marker.
We are aware that our 7/8 needs both 3 then 4, 4 then 3 options.
When we add new time signatures, we would have to work out rhythms for existing styles (where we can) as each rhythm is carefully crafted, but just simple backing would be all you require I would think. We might some day be able to create a separate style pack with odd time signatures.
Currently there is no user defined rhythm input available. We may work on this in the future. At this time we are concentrating on expanding the existing style pack range.
Thanks for your ideas. We appreciate them.
Could you incorporate rhythm notation into the player such as found in this version of Ruby My Dear posted a while back.
Ruby, My Dear (Rhythm Notation) by Thelonious Monk
Hello Diatonic,
we have not forgotten our early correspondence with you about this (took a long time for me to work on that if you remember.) What I had to do with that example was very ad hoc.
If we implement rhythm notation with the player it will probably be in a much better way. At the moment we are working on more styles so are quite busy testing at the moment. We have other development planned after this, so it will be a while before we can look at anything like this.
Thanks for your reminder and your posts in all the various forums.
:)
I don't know if this has been requested previously bu it would be nice to have the option of outputting the audio via Airplay to an AppleTV or Airport Express. That way if I want to practice with the player I can output the iPad wirelessly to my home audio system. I don't know if Apple makes the Airplay features available to developers or restricts it to their apps.
Brian
For example, it would be cool to have the option to have the bassist/rhythm section play with a two-feel on either the first, last, both, or all choruses when using medium and up tempo swing. Having a style editor might help facilitate this.
Many thanks from UNT for an awesome app!
Any chance of having the Mixer levels saved on a song-by-song basis rather than globally? I'd love to use the Smooth piano/string on Smooth tunes, but the other styles I want bass/drum only.
Hi there, I'm not sure if this has been requested before but I don't have time to wade through all 20 pages of this thread, so:
I would love to be able to view the entire form of the tunes in horizontal mode and lock that orientation as well. So one would have to change the layout to 8 bars per line instead of 4.
Is there any chance of that happening in a future update? That would be huge!
If this has not previously been requested, could you consider adding a play-pause-rewind button on the song page, to facilitate the play along feature (which is immensely useful) without the need to tap to access the play screen? Intended to make interaction with playback a little more efficient. Thanks for a wonderful app.

Yes, me too on that one. Then you don't have to tap the screen twice just to stop. So far the only way I've found to stop on one tap is to hit the playlist. But that doesn't work for pause, and then your song has changed.
Hi.
I have two requests I haven't seen that perfect the musical theory aspect and the chart-building process:
1) the transposition roller should indicate all 15 keys, not just 12 - I wanted to transpose to F# but can only use Gb. The choice is made depending on the chord changes, and sometimes in one key they display better than in another
2) more section/rehearsal letters would be welcome. When making charts I've often wished for E, F, and even G!!!
[Continuing the thought, but maybe not feasible or really useful, or too heavy to program: rehearsal numbers that indicate: a) number of times to repeat something (since you can't nest repeats); b) the number of repetition that that section will be played (like "on the x chorus, play vamp", or "vamp between solos"). It'd be like "ABAC" [1]-solos "ABAC" [2]-"2" vamp [played only 2nd chorus]-solo "ABAC" [3]-"3" vamp [played only 3rd chorus]-head "ABAC" [4]- coda.
Like Coltrane's "My favorite things", or "Spain", but you don't want to write out the whole thing for just two vamps...
Hope I was clear enough - just an idea...]
3) nested repeats ;-)
4) I second the "start from bar #" motion!!!!
Bonjour, - A simple pointer or hook to lead sheets would be very useful. I'm working iReal B in reverse - I find a title or track I know or like - then look for the lead sheet. Might be wiki ph n ia or such. Or I might have it. If I do have it - usually in the wrong key for my one of my Saxes. that is where irealB is a real boon. However - if playing with others, no so straight forward.
I don't have the experience to have second nature to jump up/down X number of semitones.
Lead sheet links would be a real advantage.
Cheers
It would be nice if the programmers would set the instrument controls independent for each tune. I turn down the Keyboard for one tune, but want it at 25% for another and full up for another. The same with the Bass and Drums. When working with 20 songs, this gets to be a burden.
I LOVE THIS APP!! I only have 3 requests: syncing/sharing of charts between the mac and iOS versions, manuscript/notation capabilities and more instruments with real instrument samples.
Hi guys
Latin/Swing is good on head in and out, but on solos it just plays swing Can we have Latin/Swing on solos as well?
Tim
The new Latin/Swing Style is really useful, and the perfect Latin to complement the usage. I'd love to see more of this concept explored - for example, medium/up swing with A as 2/4 feel, B as 4/4 with subsequent choruses till final all in 4. Perhaps (if there is room) a C sub-style power groove as well,( but how you fit all of that in there already is beyond me...)
Thanks as always for an incredible app.
Could we possibly get either 5/8 or 2/8 and 3/8 added? I have a few original arrangements that need it and it kind of complicates the form having to use 5/4 and doubling up the other time signatures.
Thanks, and great job!
One of the threads made reference (dflat) to a 'waltz' style in jazz pack. I purchased all the packs but could not find a specific style 'waltz'. I realize 3/4 time can be set in any of the styles but none of them sound like a waltz. Same with 'polka'. Is there any plan to add an old time 'waltz' style and an old time 'polka' style. I use irealb for the accordion and the jazz and latin styles work well for many songs but I couldn't find anything suitable for polkas or waltzes. Or any plan to allow users to create styles?
I agree, this would be a useful feature. I also think that panning of the instruments would be very useful especially in a live situation. You could then either a) create a nice stereo mix for the pa or b) pan one instrument completely to one side and send it to a seperate mixer channel for eq-ing, easy volume adjustments, etc.
Thanks for a great app guys. Keep up the good work!
@Tim - Tim, I don't know if this will work the way you need it to, and I have not tried it with Latin/Swing, but it works on other rhythms, so it should be good here:
Instead of telling the app to play the part 4x in the performance window, play it one time in performance, and add a 4x repeat to the score. I believe this will keep the Latin/Swing (it hasn't gone to a second chorus.)
