The new in app guitar chord looks great! Have you considered a similar in app feature for ukulele (GCEA)?
Thanks for the great app,
Ted
I LOVE the new MIDI export! I just have a small request (it's never enough, is it - sorry..) Can you give us the option to save to disk like you do with WAV files? It's a lot faster for me to copy from iTunes than to email and extract. Thanks.
BTW, I also want to thank you for the tap-hold start anywhere, it's saving TONS of development time...
Thanks for the great app! I'm a novice guitar player rather than a performing muscian and I have thought of a couple of features that would help speed up the learning process:
1) It would be really helpful to have the guitar chord diagram come up when I tap a chord on the page.
2) I like that the program tends to cycle through different versions of the chords, but it would also be nice to be able to turn this off so I can focus on one particular set of chords at a time.
3) It would be awesome if there were an air print option to print out a PDF of the chord diagrams for all of the chords in the song. So bascially if there are 4 chords in the song. You would hit the button and be able to print a PDF of the guitar (or piano) chord diagrams for those four chords. It would be really great if there were an option that asked if you wanted to print multiple variations, which would include the alternate positions that the app cycles through.
Anyway, just a wish list.
Thank you for the great app!
I think this is still an outstanding issue... I would really, REALLY like to be able to simply have a metronome rather than the canned Jazz/Latin/Pop styles. I play the bass with old-time music, and the default styles are simply unusable for me. The playback feature is severely crippled if there's no audible reference. If I turn down the drums and so forth that clash with the simple I-V beat, there is basically no audio left.
A simple metronome should be available, either as one of the available styles or as a configuration setting that plays it in conjunction with a style (which should give the option of 'no style' in the menu, allowing one to just have the metronome).
This seems to be a rather longstanding request. The forced styles (without a simple beat) is really my only disappointment with this app.
I have tried the three basic styles with the piano and drums turned down (to no avail), but I haven't specifically used Jazz>Practice because I don't have any additional style packs. I had read some reference to doing things like you mention, but it sounded like a sort of workaround. Plus, it's a bit odd to have to buy an additional style pack to escape from using styles! :)
I'm asking that the metronome be part of the core functionality. Let styles be styles. I was hoping for a simple 'step through the chords' app, which is where IRB seems to have gotten its roots.
EDIT: to clarify the last point about leaving the metronome independent of the style; one might want both. I can envision a future style that plays a simple I-V bass line, but a beginner might still want the metronome on top of it to help learn the timing.
I have a request for half-time/straight time jazz swing - similar to the Latin/Jazz, but half-time bass & drium groove. This would work quite well as a brush kit, so I will expand the request:
I'd like a jazz brush Style pack - half-time to straight, an various straight variations like the Jazz pack with sticks. Maybe a brush to stick style.
Thanks, love this app!
Thanks for continuing to make iRealB a fantastic software for musicians. The new play/loop and chord chart features are super useful! When I'm practicing with the playback feature, I like to alternate between "practice" and a style mode. It would be nice to be able to double-tap or three-finger tap any place on the viewing screen and be able to pull up the control box (vs having to each time double-finger tap and then tap the music note symbol to pull up the control box). Thanks in advance for you consideration!
Funk!! Please there are many songs that I just can't play without having a funk style to do so
Please can you add an on screen volume slider that stays on view during playback because changing the volume when your
iPad is on a music stand and you have an instrument in your hands is very difficult because you have to steady the device with one hand and use the volume button on the other side.
Please could you add a funk style for tunes like The Chicken and all the other cool funk tunes that jazz and big bands play?
If the 'rock' styles could be improved that would be a bonus but not essential!
Thanks for reading!
Lisa.
Hi again, I forgot to mention when asking for a slider for the volume and a funk style that it would be nice if the Latin swing style kept up the Latin swing style after the first pass through the song. It's very frustrating that it just stays in swing mode. When you play say 'Night in Tunisia' with other musicians, you still keep alternating between the styles even when people are improvising, not just during the head. Thanks for all your hard work, it's the best app on the planet!!!
Hello,
Thanks for this great app.
I have just bought the extension to see the piano chords and have two comments:
1. It would be great to see chords as written in a score, because I find dots on a keyboard hard to read.
2. It would be great to be able to see the chords with the voicing/tensions actually being used in the current song, rather than generic voicing.
Thanks,
We use this ipad app in performances and it's almost perfect. Would like to have a way to have the app progress automatically to the next song in the playlist with an adjustable timer to space the time between songs. Then we could concentrate on the performance and not the iPad.
this probably is not what you would want, but might be useful for study - you can export the midi file of a song (from the Player window) then import it into Notation software (for instance Sibelius on your computer, or a notation app if you have an iPad) then view the voicings.
BTW, our Player engine is randomized to some extent so if you render another midi file of the same song, the voicings might be different for the same chords. You will find this also if the song is played a few times through before ending, each chorus it may generate different voicings.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Hi! Could iReal b be part of the apps for iOS than can be "mirrored" ?
Very useful to magnify the score with a projector when playing.
Regards.
Lisa, I export a WAV, bring it into Adobe Audition (any basic audio editor will do) and cut and paste the sections as needed. It's a bit of work but then I have the arrangement i wanted.
I import into iTunes and use Big Button to playback one at a time, or switch back to iReal b as needed. A bit clumsy, but it works and is WAY easier than re-writing the chart...
How about double time and half time feel for all styles . I don't think it should be a probem which is just configuring the coding for the tempo setting. You dont have to create a new style from scratch.
And also in the editor window it could be nice to choose a section or the whole song and extend or compress the harmonic rhythm(duration of the chords) so that if the chart is too long or too busy looking you can change it.....
Just a comment to those who want more funk. The problem is, most funk grooves originate from a specific bass/drum pattern that is unique to each song. Play I Feel Good and The Chicken and maybe a Rick James tune - there is no one pattern that will give you a feel you can live with (I've tried to find something like this for a different system. I couldn't find a solution.)
But see for yourself, take your four favorite funk tunes by four different artists, and find a common B&D groove. Good luck...
Now what you CAN do to a VERY limited amount (quarter or eighth notes - quarter notes and the whole song double time.) Use the red circle chord(less) to play just the bass, N.C. for holes. IF YOU CAN FIT THE SONG ON THE PAGE at double tempo-every real-time bar requires 2 iRb bars - you can sometimes find work-around combinations of rhythms and bass patterns that can, if not imitate, at least inspire.
Good luck, and if you get some good ones - SHARE please...
I noticed that the iOS version is able to browse songs by style, such as bossa, ballad, etc. This functionality would be greatly appreciated in the Android version of the app. My saxophone professor has this app on the iPhone and showed me how he can find all the ballads from the list, and it would be awesome if I could do that with my Android device as well.
Use with Alesis I/O Dock. Make it respond to foot switch? Ideally, an pre-assignable ability: skip to the next song, pause, mute piano, bass and or drums. Performers often have their hands full.
I now have a number of playlists with over 50 titles, a few with over 200 (Bossa, MedSwing, Funk, Set1, Set2, Set3, etc.) When I work from one of these lists, as opposed to my pre-planned set lists of a dozen or so tunes each, I browse for what strikes my fancy. But frequently one title will suggest another, and an alpha selector would be invaluable.
Is it possible to add an Alpha Selection border like in the Songs list? Does the OS support it? It really would help in live gig situations.
Thanks.
I teach guitar to a lot of beginners. What would be great for me is the ability to have a header section where I can put chord boxes. Just a thought!
I've read here and there, and don't remember seeing this elsewhere; forgive me if I duplicate posts.
I would love to be able to print (PDF or txt file) the contents of:
- list of songs complete
- list of songs from style / composer listing
- playlists (NOT list of songs in a playlist) (this has workaround, but sending via mail can be cumbersome).
An export function would be very Appreciated! ;-)
Great program but some suggestions :) BTW I am using an iPad
1) Editor screen needs to be bigger, put the edit screen across the full width of the screen with a scroll bar to the right and move the buttons below it. You have a touch area on the edit screen of only 3mm to select a bar, which is the most common function, and a touch area of 13mm for each button. Most of the edit buttons don't need to be that big. Makes no sense :)
2) When a bar is selected with an existing chord, highlight the text in the text-box so that you can simply type in a new value not have to use the (tiny) delete button to first delete the existing chord. This is very standard programming 101 stuff and absolutely infuriating to work with.
3) We NEED an 8/8 time signature or the ability to halve the tempo of the accompaniment relative to the BPM so we could use 2 X 4/4 bars (come to think of it this would be a great feature anyway :)) , If you think not then please can someone show me how to program something like the intro to "Chained to the wheel" by the Black Sorrows?
4) Buttons to move the cursor left and right like the iPhone version not just left. Much more useful than the duplicated number buttons.
5) Big Play and Stop buttons on the bottom of the performance screen. Holding the bar for a second is a good feature but very annoying in reality. A three action requirement to bring up and start a song is not even worth commenting on. Touch the screen to show the menu, select the menu option to open the popup then press the start button!!! Really!!
6) Option to disable not just mute the count in. 0, 1 or 2 bars
Thanks for taking the time to read this, you are onto something really good here.
Cheers Simon
An option to play chord alterations instead of simple chords (as the pianists do in the regular performance) - ie. instead of Dm7-G7-CMaj7 play Dm13-G7(b9#11)-CMaj7(#11)..
Thanks for reply. I know I can edit the chords, what I meant is to have a switch to play alterations automatically - either randomly, or based on some logic. The same way pianists do in a band - they have simple chords in chart, but play alterations, to spice things a little.Quote:
This is already a capability of the player - edit the chords and choose the alterations as you wish (IReal b wondrously covers basically all of them).
I thought you meant that...
I'd think about getting a pianist instead of using a program (necessarily limited) for your accompaniment... ;-)
On some songs I use a simple bass/blank chord intro... also used in solos. I want to be able to tell my bass which octave to play.
Found that an expression pedal will control audio level on the Alessis IO dock, for fades, but would be nice if it was programmable.
Larger edit area would be nice for fat fingered folk. A great app. Use it in all our gigs.
Get an iPad. WAY better editing because of the larger area. I find it 2-3X as fast if I know what I am creating fresh, and much easier editing. Then copy to the smaller device and go Bluetooth to your amp - magic. I love the look in the customers' eyes when I pull a bass player out of my - er, iPod... :-)
<edit>
Sorry, I guess you are already on the iPad. maybe use a stylus, so fat-finger issues don't arise? I tend to be pretty clumsy, but don't have an issue on this box, though I can mis-key on my iPod fairly easily...
If you look at this app as a setup, as well as a direct real-time player, this becomes a bit more work, but very easy. If you are trying to do this live on the gig, yeah, it won't do it at the moment (but these guys are GOOD, I used to code, but I can't imagine how they could get this much functionality out of such a small memory and engine.)
But if you export the file 1X-in, 1X solo, 1X out (So 3X as a WAV, you get a full chorus of each, plus whatever intro/outro you created.)
I bring this file into Adobe Audition (use your favorite WAV editor,) mark the exact cut-and-paste points for the sections, then assemble my arrangement. After a bit of practice, a simple arrangement takes about 2 minutes or less, and a complex chart like Tunisia, with the solo breaks, long and short intro breaks, all the rhythm changes - maybe 10 minutes, tops, if you know what you want going in.
If you are serious about using these tracks, not jut for practice, this gives you a MUCH wider set of choices. I keep my notepad on the same page as iReal b, so O can make notes about new or edited arrangements. It works beautifully for me, except I'd like to select which sample set I was playing for any given rhythm - the guitar playing the piano chord might sound a bit odd, but when it's background it adds color. And the accordion in the straight Rock would be killer zydeco... But all things are possible through the will of - MIDI export! So you CAN get anything you want, you don't even need Alice's Restaurant (Sorry, I'm probably a LOT older than you.) Just a good MIDI library and some time.
With app called jam genius chord changes are generated automatically. Is there a way to import those chord changes into irealbook? Secondly is there a way to import a text file with chord changes into irealbook.
PS: The jam genius output looks exactly irealbook.
Well, I'm pianist myself...:-) I recommended this app to many of my horn friends, as the playback works great for practicing, but I really think the real time alterations would improve the app a lot, and some basic logic, at least for the basic progressions like II-V-I, I-VI-ii-V etc. shouldn't be that difficult to do...
Be great to be able to set a particular style as the default for a playlist
For instance - if I have a playlist 'Gypsy Swing / Jazz' for gypsy jazz songs - to be able top set the style to automatically be 'Gypsy Jazz' whilst keeping the songs original tempo instead of having to select it each time and save it as new version for songs not originally made in that style.
cheers

Newbie!!! Just got it for the new iPad and my Tower and laptop.. SYNC between all devices for sure! Have made a few charts on the 8core tower today.. Would love to be able to instantly transfer/sync to iPad and laptop. Since I'm quite new..I'd love to learn some workflow suggestions for for use with multiple devices! Thanks!

When using the press-and-hold start, it would be great to have a 0 count-in option-or perhaps 1 beat - but waiting a full bar is frustrating when you're developing complex tunes.
But as always, love this app!
Hey, Dave G, welcome to a beautiful and functional world of music!!
There is no cloud sync for now, but it's not needed since sharing and backing up charts is easy: go into the Hub, then "utilities", and choose "backup". That creates an e-mail which you can send to yourself, and download on any other device (which has iReal b installed, of course). In the letter, tap the appropriate links and you transfer playlists and library complete!
You could even choose to "share by e-mail" from the song view, so as not to download the entire library, just the song.
Remember that player settings and playlist settings are not saved, so you'll have to do those by hand. For now, there is no way to save those settings (hopefully in the to-do list).
happy music-making!
