Diminished, Diminished 7th, Half-Diminished
Diminished, Diminished 7th, Half-Diminished
In a diminished chord, every note is a minor third apart and the chord can be called (named) by any of the notes it contains.
The diminished seventh chord contains the further diminished 7th (enharmonicly the 6th) so that all the notes have a step and a half (minor third) between them. So, with just three diminished 7th chords (not counting inversions) you can accommodate all twelve roots.
While some musicians use o and o7 chords interchangeably,
in the iRealPro player:
- Co contains C,Eb,Gb - 1,3b,5b
- Co7 contains C,Eb,Gb,Bbb(A) - 1,3b,5b,7b (6)
The half-diminished ∅ (min7b5) contains the b5 and the (already once diminished) 7th. C∅= C∅7 contains: C,Eb,Gb,Bb
That's why the o7 chord will slide up (or down) three frets and work. The ∅7, um, not so much.
